The discreet appearance of this Portofino from IWC inspires confidence. Why? Well, first of all there’s the elegant white dial that projects the other elements into the foreground. Then we have the elongated hands, which are delicate but still highly legible. The date window – this is the first Portofino with a big date – is in precisely the right position, and its gently contoured numerals are a pleasing contrast to the rather austere hour and minute markers. The small-seconds and eight-day power-reserve displays give the dial its uncluttered appearance. Out on the street I see plenty of people who dress conservatively but others who prefer a more flamboyant look. This watch goes perfectly with any individual style without distracting from it. I like that a lot. Portofino from IWC, red gold (18ct), with sapphire crystal back cover, hand-wound movement and big date. Limited to 125 watches.
